so i went for a ski
maybe the last one
no snow for skiing here,
but inside the blue line
there were a few new inches
and this hag stone
formed of ice
and rock
she sat quietly and said
welcome, welcome
and so i settled into the icy snow
amazed by the cold cold forest
a little new snow
and one large tree that said
turn back this time
listen.
(i have fallen here,
badly sprained an ankle
a half mile in.)
and today, all ice and tired knees
i turned back.
a small ski is better
far better
than none
leaving the woods
for the foothills
where home calls me
and wendy says,
home, supper, please.
and then i made cookies.
come over! you see,
i have cookies!
a hag stone? hmmm.
ReplyDeletestretching a little, but made of ice and rock. and a hole!
ReplyDeleteWhere I lived in Greece there was a beach filled with hag stones. I made all kinds of things from them and hung them all over my terrace. I'm sure the villagers thought I was doing magic or something... they'd have been right!
ReplyDeleteGlad you turned back. Skiing on ice is only fun when you're vertical and the land is flat, in my opinion!
v, hag stones and my special cookies (being not a cook means that when i do make cookies, they'd better be good) sound like lovely circle partners.
ReplyDeleteskiing AND cookies all in one day?! what a miraculous day!
ReplyDeleteI'd come for the cookies - but only if they're chocolate chip!
ReplyDeleteaimee and jean, the cookies are oatmeal, chocolate chip, walnut, and coconut and are famous in my family!
ReplyDeleteI'll take the cookies and leave all the skiing to others.... (and I'll leave the hulking timber truck for others too!)
ReplyDeleteronnie, i shall feed you cookies and teach you to ski! it's easy (this is x-country, not expensive and hard downhill). and oh, the loveliness of getting in the deep woods.
ReplyDeletewhat a lovely way to end the day...cookies and a puppy and a warm home to return to...they sound fattening but sooooo good.
ReplyDeleteoh, yes, and they're made with butter. but lots of healthy stuff, and if you only eat a little at a time, it's ok. ha!
ReplyDeleteOh now I am craving one of those cookies!! Shall I give you my address? Hahaha - kidding :) I love the first truck photo with all of the dancing circles!
ReplyDeletechoco coconut cookies!!! i'd come only if you show me those cut tree trunks.
ReplyDeleteV- amazing photo of the hag hole - it really did look like a mysterious person skulking there. Go well. B
ReplyDeletenancy, you have to drop in!
ReplyDeleteneki, log trucks are ubiquitous here...this one was very tidy!
barry, surely there was a hag!
It really hasn't been much of a ski winter has it. So glad you turned back because, if it's the same snow we got, it's too fluffy and you just go right through to ice or gravel and crash bang over you go.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a cook either so I'll come over for one of your cookies!
penny, i AM good at cookies!
