cattail

fiber.
cattail.
this wonderful seed fiber
makes fine paper.
i like to mix it with it's own leaves.
yesterday i found some heads just bursting
and ready to ride the winds.
wendy had a stick to subdue
into shards
which she did.
not much studio action, though i had a whole
beautiful day.
some days are like that.

  3. i'd love to map all the tiny fiber connections opening just on that one plant. Paper made of this must be so soft?

  4. m-such a map is a grand idea. pure seed head paper looks like pigskin and is soft. seed fiber plus leaves makes a s=tougher paper with wonderful color and those dark dots from the seed itself.

  5. we would find two of these and sit drumming on the ice until the heads would explode in a cloud of fuzzies and the wind would take them everywhere.

  6. Hmmm. I know where to find LOTS of cattail fluff. If I don't have time to try the paper making can the seeds be saved for awhile?

  7. susan, they will be fine outside, new ones coming soon. freezing will also work. drying is problematic because of explosions!!!

  8. Oh yes - the explosions. The boys played with them last year and would come in covered with fuzz and it doesn't really brush off. In their hair and everywhere!

I may try to gather and freeze a few to try the paper when we get the chance. Thanks!

  9. Well, I really never SAW that before, but looking at your photo, the bottom part especially, I was reminded of an book I have with old star/constellation maps. Points with lines connecting them. So when the fluffy seeds are knitted losely together, but starting to fray, so to speak, it was clear to me that they are star-map like. See them?
