pulp dreams

so many people are suffering with colds
and flu
and i am sniffle free.
so far--
so, on saturday i took this great shot
of what a papermaker dreams about.
pulp.
 egyptian cotton
a banner that i loved in the foyer at slu.
somehow a huge loon and beautiful cotton pulp
stew together in my heart
and i think of all the art that comes from physical
material experience.
matter, matteria, material
there's no coincidence that
papermakers call this stuff STUFF.
i am in a mindset to make
paper.

  3. Seeing this post had me filling my hollander and switching it on for a beat of found roadside cotton complete with plant remains and red dust collected in western NSW recently - if I knew how to send photo I would. Yes, the stuff of contentment.

  7. and I bet you have a field full of wonderful "stuff" for that very purpose - and to hold morning dew, catch falling leaves, rustle when walked through, keep us looking.

  8. 'stuffing about' IS doing stuff , perhaps unplanned , perhaps directionless, perhaps without getting anywhere .. kind of a negative view of what is going on..
    for example.
Q.what have you been doing on your day off work?
    A. ooooh! just stuffing about!
    or
oooo , well i just stuffed that up!

so ends the australian colloquial language lesson

  10. OK Velma, will email hollander pics. Haven't pulled a sheet yet but so far beaten pulp is disappointingly stringy, not fluffy like usual cotton pulp and your lovely Egyptian is. Will post a sheet if successful, certainly outback colours/inclusions in my roadside pulp are wonderful. Would it throw a cat amongst the pigeons if we papermakers talked not just 'stuff', but 'half-stuff'? Enjoy your blog esp the paper. Jenny in Australia.
