coloring paper

the colors are even more vibrant
as they say farewell to summer
(though sometimes it tends to murk)
the chemistry in the arches,
sizing, etc,
seems to make patterning
more available and rich on the paper surfaces
color and pattern
the paper has stretched and wrinkled.
even post pressing
it's surprisingly strong
it looks like i have one more to do
i found some new plants
pattern inside a sphere
taking off the dyestuffs
and
reusing them on some cotton cheesecloth
that was quite pale
and now has a bit more oomph.

  1. valerie, i just can't get the color right, though this batch is more accurate. the intensity of patterning will be mitigated by structure/use. promise!

  4. henrietta, i appreciate your thoughts...i'm seeing the last of the rosa leaves going, and it seems like this fall's dyeing is all about using up those and sumac berries and violas and.....
jean, i have been hearing some loud thumps! here and far! i couldn't find the paper...will try again, but didn't manage there or at hiromi's or the japanese paper place. hmm.

  5. Velma - opus's site doesn't list it but they get it from the Japanese paper place. I googled kiraku kozo and came up with www.fineartstore.com in N.Y. and they list it with a picture.

  7. Such rich textures, patterns and color! Inspiring.

don't have a press and don't make my own paper, but will try some plant material on arches water color paper, weted, then a layer of wax paper, and weighed down with rocks and books. Nothing to loose. Also plan to try some on thin cotton cloth wrapped and bundled to sit in a bath of poke berry dye for the rest of the month. Once more, nothing to lose.

  8. ms. press is only for final drying under pressure, not necessary at all, a stack of books will do. i'd put the paper bundled up in the dyebath.
