another passing

a canine friend, one of my friend's dogs, has passed.
she was 13, a doberman, who survived many changes in her life.
the final, after going to live with him, was the arrival of first one puppy
and then three years later another.
(these photos taken two weeks ago)

lena
 a big, rough, strong girl,
accepted big changes in her life
welcomed and learned to play like a pup with them.
wendy she had a different, rough start with,
but they eventually became allies and could ride in the car seat together.
and walk in the woods together.
good bye dear friend
wendy and i will miss you.

absolutely. surprising that wendy is well, and she went so quickly.

i've heard it said that there is a rainbow bridge where our beloved four legged companions wait for us and greet us once we too cross over in too peaceful times. don't know much about after life and next worlds or such but i believe that rainbow bridge is in our heart. in dreams.

We just lost our border collie of 10 years from abrupt kidney failure. Still don't know what brought it on. Sure miss him. Love seeing your Wendy! And I hope I get to see my Merlin again on 'rainbow bridge!'

vale Lena, 13 is a good age for a big dog but it's always very sad when they pass on. I hope you and Wendy were able to give her a hug before.
I had a dobie once, but he was stolen.

so sorry to hear about Lena. Please let Marc know we are thinking of him.

thanks everyone for the kind words. lena went from being an outdoor kennel to a one man dog. she loved people, and once protected wendy against a nasty lab. lena had the dubious distinction of being the dog who broke his glasses AND a front tooth. she had a huge heart and a funny, sweet personality. she loved the sunshine and her biscuits!

Lovely photos of Lena. She sounded like a real treasure in yours and your friends life.it's sad we only have them for such a short time...although 13 years is good. Hugs to you and friend and Wendy.

Sweet girl. Sad to hear. I wonder what a dog thinks of another dog's absence.

so sorry to hear of Lena's passing, we become so attached to our furry friends it's hard to let them go. Did Marc keep one of her puppies? Hugs to all and an extra to Wendy.

susan, i think the other ones noticed her absence, but she'd been ill for almost two weeks and drew away from the "pack"
jean, though she was meant to be a breeding bitch, she never did "take". that's why she was adopted out. it was probably too cold in her old kennel environment. she never could get hot enough after five years of extreme cold.

just an extra note here re dogs noticing the absence of other dogs: i've always found that my dogs have been aware of the absence of others who they have been friends with. little Charlie mourned the passing of my old dog several years ago just as we did, and he's now missing the loss of his little mate who used to live behind us.

I am sorry for your loss. I agree with Kaite, I've watched my dogs mourn for one another.

kaite, nancy it's interesting to watch and try not to project our experience on them...
neki, she was indeed something else-a presence.

lena loved you hannah. remember how silly she could be? and how fierce when she was in doberman alert mode?
